Ventricular Tap

A medical procedure in which the ventricular system is cannulated (punctured) by means of a catheter or special blunt needle to sample and/or drain spinal fluid. The tap requires a small hole to be drilled in the skull.

The tap may involve a single puncture or it may be used to implant an indwelling catheter or device. The catheter inserted into the ventricle may be connected to a manometer and used to measure ICP.
